Chloe Smith appointed new work and pensions secretary

Chloe Smith has been selected by new prime minister Liz Truss as secretary of state for work and pensions.

She replaces Thérèse Coffey as she moves to the role of health secretary and deputy PM.

Smith has been a minister in the Department for Work and Pensions since September 2021 and was an early supporter of Truss in her bid to become PM.

Smith previously served as minister of state for disabled people, work and health from 2021 to 2022, and has been a member of parliament for Norwich North since 2009.

She was also minister for the constitution and devolution from February 2020 to September 2021, parliamentary secretary at the cabinet office from January 2018 to February 2020 and parliamentary under secretary of state for Northern Ireland and assistant government whip for the House of Commons from 2017 to 2018.

Prior to entering parliament in 2009, Smith worked for Deloitte.

Meanwhile, Kwasi Kwarteng has been appointed chancellor, James Cleverly as foreign secretary, and Simon Clarke becomes levelling up secretary.

Smith becomes the eight work and pensions secretary since the Conservatives took power in 2010.
