Cyprus identified as danger hotspot for 'drive-by downloads', phishing and malware in 2023 - report

Cyprus has been identified alongside Indonesia as the least cybersecure country in which to do business, according to a report into cybersecurity statistics commissioned by Roboot Online, a UK based SEO and digital marketing specialist.

The dangers faced include drive-by downloads, phishing sites, malware hosting sites, and compromised computers. These factors were reviewed to create a cyber danger index score and establish the country rankings.

Key global findings include:

• Indonesia and Cyprus are the least cyber-secure countries to work abroad
• Finland is the most cyber-secure country worldwide 
• Five of the top 10 countries with the least secure networks are in Asia

Reboot SEO Company commissioned the research in light of the growth of digital nomads - people who have increasingly decided to work remotely, as this is now possible using modern technology and network access. 

"Surprisingly, Indonesia has already established itself as a favourite hotspot for remote workers, enticing travellers with its thriving capital of Jakarta, and popular tourist destinations in Bali."

"Meanwhile, Cyprus, who host over 3,000 phishing and malware sites combined, have only recently started to welcome remote workers to their shores."

Romania is the other European country in the top 10 least cybersecure jurisdictions.

However, not all emerging countries are ranked poorly. Honduras is among the most cybersecure ranked, with low statistics for drive-by downloads, malware and phishing sites. Similarly, Guatemala ranks among the more cybersecure.

The findings may be of concern for the EU, given the rankings of Cyprus and Romania.

The EU's Digital Services Act is intended to "create a safer digital space where the fundamental rights of users are protected and to establish a level playing field for businesses".
