Hong Kong regulator warns of senior SFC executives impersonators

Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has cautioned the public against instant text messages from scammers impersonating the SFC’s senior executives including its chairman.

Members of the public have recently reported to the SFC that they received text messages on WhatsApp from individuals claiming to be the SFC’s Chairman Mr Tim Lui and Executive Director of Supervision of Markets, Mr Rico Leung. According to their reports, these text messages contained comments on specific stocks.

The SFC further said it wished to clarify that these instant text messages are fraudulent and it will take resolute action against fraudsters attempting to deceive in the name of SFC staff.

The SFC also urged the public to exercise caution against imposter scams and refrain from sending money if requested to do so by any persons claiming to be SFC staff. Members of the public should contact the SFC by email ([email protected]) in case of doubt.

The SFC has referred the case to the Police.
