Manager of Artemis SmartGARP’s fund range Peter Saacke is retiring from the fund management industry to revisit his teacher training  with a plan to become a maths teacher.

Saacke has worked at Artemis since 2002, when he joined from Merrill Lynch, initially running the Artemis European Growth strategy before taking on the Global Growth portfolio in 2004.

He will step down from his managerial role at the end of June 2024, at which point Raheel Altaf will take over as lead manager of the fund.

Altaf has worked alongside Saacke on the SmartGARP range since 2014, and the outgoing lead said he "cannot think of anyone better to assume my fund management responsibilities and look forward to cheering on Raheel and the rest of the team from the side lines after my departure from Artemis".

Artemis' senior partner, Mark Murray said: "over his long tenure at Artemis, Peter has made many contributions as a fund manager but also in his eight years as our CIO.

"When he steps aside from fund management at the end of June, he will do so with our enduring thanks. We wish him the very best for the next phase of his life."

Saacke will train as a maths teacher at the Institute of Education at University College London and as a member of NowTeach, the professional network of career changers co-founded by former FT journalist Lucy Kellaway.

Prior to his financial services career, the outgoing manager spent a decade studying and teaching in the UK, Germany and Italy and said that "while I have no regrets about leaving academia, the one thing I did miss was teaching".

"I had always assumed that at some point I would return to academia, perhaps via teaching at a business school. But when I read Lucy Kellaway's book, Re-educated, it struck me that perhaps someone with my background is more needed in a school, teaching a subject for which there is a chronic shortage of teachers," he said.

"Benefited from receiving a free university education in the UK, and - like many of my peers in our industry - I have been a beneficiary of trends that led to rising inequality in our society. In my eyes, the best way to combat inequality is via education, so I am hoping to make a small contribution and give a little bit back."
