Polar Capital has hired Dan Boston to join its American arm in September as head of a new international small and mid-cap equities investment team.

US-based Boston will be the senior portfolio manager of a mutual fund that Polar Capital America expects to launch after his arrival later this year. Further details of the mutual fund will be released closer to launch.

He will bring to Polar Capital nearly 20 years of experience in international small and mid-cap company investing, most recently working at Brown Capital Management in Baltimore, Maryland, where he led the international small company strategy, which managed $3.5bn across a 5-star Morningstar-rated mutual fund and various managed accounts.

He joined Brown Capital Management in 2019 after serving as a partner and senior portfolio manager at Baird, overseeing its international small cap and global and international large cap strategies.

Earlier in his career he worked as head of international equity and senior portfolio manager at Ensign Peak Advisors, managing the firm’s sizeable all-cap international equity portfolio, where he specialised in international small companies. He started his career in 2005 at Wasatch Global Advisors as a global small cap equity analyst.

Gavin Rochussen, chief executive officer of Polar Capital, said: "We have always been clear in our strategy to build a presence in the US, where there is significant demand for specialist active managers with differentiated fund strategies. We already have an effective sales team in place in the US, including our most recent hire, David Smithwick, who joined us earlier this month. We are very pleased to have Dan joining us later this year and look forward to launching a compelling new mutual fund that will complement our growing Emerging Markets mutual funds.”

Iain Evans, global head of distribution at Polar Capital said: “We are very pleased to be welcoming Dan to Polar Capital later this year. His significant expertise in the small and mid-cap sector will strengthen our ability to identify the best opportunities across the industry and further enhance our position in this area. We look forward to him joining and launching our new mutual fund later this year.”

Dan Boston, managing director, Polar Capital global international small and mid-cap equities investment team, said: “Polar Capital is a very well-respected global asset management business that has a clear strategy, a superior business model, and an enviable culture. When I was looking for my next challenge, it was too good an opportunity to turn down. As Polar Capital continues to establish its footprint in North America, I am very excited to have been asked to lead and build its International Small and Mid-cap Equities business later this year.”
